Social movements and the need for change in civil society. The chief theoretical aspects

Agata Rozalska

Abstract

The landscape of civic engagement has changed dramatically recently. Social movements have come in place of third-sector organizations, which have been dominant so far. These movements are new and key players on today’s civic arena in Poland –with one-of-a-kind and dynamically responsive collective identities. In contrast with the aforementioned non-governmental organizations, social movements cannot be constrained and squeezed into the mere institutional and legal framework of social life. The purpose of this article is to discuss the chief theoretical aspects of social movements along with the criteria for their identification as well as definition-related problems or proposed typology, while demonstrating the relation to and the striving for a broadly understood social change. On top of the above, my intention is to synthetically describe the „position” of social movements in the civic society; viewing them as its major elements on the one hand and as entities which determine its shape on the other hand.
