Is it possible for a nation to apologize? The determinants and characteristics of collective acts of apology.

Agata Młynarska-Jurczuk

Abstract

Collective apologies are an inseparable part of contemporary politics. The mainaim of this paper is to present both the social and historical background of the growing popularity of collective apologies and to indicate the terms of their effectiveness. Since notions such as guilt, harm and forgiveness belong to the sphere of personal experience and interpersonal relations, any attempts to transfer them onto a collective level will be especially problematic. Most of all, it is a question of building the legitimacy of political apologies and about the methods used to create such a legitimacy, as well as their underlying political character. Finally, the aim of this paper is to illustrate the theoretical considerations included in it, on the basis of an empirical analysis of the apologies for the Jedwabne massacre made by Aleksander Kwaśniewski.
