TRWANIE I PRZEMIANY SYSTEMÓW KULTUROWYCH W TUNEZJI

Anna Barska

Abstract

Tunisia has undergone various cultural influences throughout its history. Although now Arab-Muslim roots are the basis of its cultural system, the Berber and Mediterranean cultures are also important. The point of departure for the analysis adopted in this paper is Edward Hall's concept of high-context culture and Geert Hofstede's dimensions of feminity and masculinity. In Tunisia high-context culture and masculinity dominate; however, low-context culture also appears due to contacts with Others, education and policies carried out by other countries. Aside from masculine culture, the feminine one gains importance and acceptance. This coexistance could be clearly observed during the cactus-jasmine revolution in Tunisia, as well as during the Arab Spring. The changes taking place at the turn of the 21st century have exposed the power of contacts and transformations in the relations with Others.
