Attitudes towards burning of tobacco smoking in public places. Structural approach

Michał Karwowski , Mikołaj Lech

Abstract

The aim of the research presented in this article is to examine the factors affecting support for the ban of tobacco smoking in public places in Poland by means of structural equation modelling. The article was written on the basis of the results of the Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) conducted in 2011. The proposed model fitted the data well and comprised 6 latent variables: support for ban of tobacco smoking in public places, the awareness of the harm of passive smoking, contact with information on the negative impact of smoking on health, physical well-being, contact with cigarette advertisements and wealth. The values of Cronbach’s alpha confirmed the internal consistency of these constructs. The awareness of the harm of passive smoking was the only factor which had a direct impact on the support for the smoking ban – its rise by one standard deviation lead to an average increase by 0,539 of standard deviation in support, ceteris paribus. The other variables had just an indirect effect on the approval of the ban. The contact with information on the negative impact of smoking on health exerted a substantial positive impact, though it was weaker than in case of awareness of passive smoking. The growth of wealth also positively influenced the support for restrictions, but the effect was really small. The improvement of physical well-being was the only factor, which caused a slight decline in the approval of the smoking ban.
