Abstract

The article examines the problem of subjectivity in the context of social time by developing the concept of rhythmic morphodynamics grounded in critical realism. Rhythm is conceptualised as a temporal, meaning-generating structure that mediates between social structure and human agency. The aim of the paper is to propose a theoretical and empirical framework for analysing rhythmic subjectivity based on four analytical categories: rhythmic chronostructure, rhythms of subjectivity, rhythmic agency, and temporal reflexivity. The empirical analysis draws on data from the Youth 4.0 project (CAWI, N = 24,483), interpreted as symptoms of the rhythmisation of values, identity, and agency among young people. The analysis highlights the role of synchronisation and desynchronisation between institutional and biographical rhythms and their impact on well-being and the formation of reflexive identity. The findings indicate that disruptions of social rhythms associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and technological transformation lead to the fragmentation of meaning, whereas progressive rhythms foster integration and the development of subjectivity. The proposed model provides an analytical framework for further research on rhythms of meaning in education, upbringing, and social life.
