Abstract

This article develops a critical realist framework for analysing subjectivity as constituted through social time. It conceptualises rhythm as an emergent, meaning-generating temporal structure that conditions the relationship between social structure and human agency. The framework comprises four analytical categories: rhythmic chronostructure, rhythms of subjectivity, rhythmic agency, and temporal reflexivity. To illustrate their empirical relevance, the article uses selected CAWI data from the first wave of the Youth 4.0 project (N = 24,483), comprising adolescents aged 13–14, young people aged 15–25, and parents or guardians, contextually supplemented by focus group material. The data are interpreted heuristically as symptoms of rhythmisation rather than as direct evidence of underlying causal mechanisms. The analysis focuses on national identity, institutional trust, community rituals, and future-oriented agency, examining the synchronisation and desynchronisation of institutional and biographical rhythms. It suggests that disruptions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and technological transformation are linked to the fragmentation of meaning and reduced well-being, whereas progressive synchronisation supports reflexive identity and agency. The article contributes a typology of progressive, stable, and regressive chronostructures and offers a framework for further research on social time, education, youth subjectivity, and well-being.
