Monotheletism in Seventh-Century Byzantium: Between Terminology and Meaning

Abstract

In seventh-century Byzantium, a prolonged and ardent debate arose concerning the sphere of operation and will in Christ, which became a major theological issue of the period. The problem and the theological debate evolved. The present article attempts to present the specificity of Monotheletism in terms of content and terminology, as well as examine its key thesis. The article discusses the relationship between the view on the unity of Christ’s person and the belief in the unity of His will. The article also presents the reasons for maintaining a specific terminology by the Monotheletes and explains the essence of Monotheletism.
