Abstract

The tin sarcophagus of Sigismund Augustus in the crypt of Wawel Cathedral is an exceptionally interesting object, both for its original ideological agenda and the material from which it was made. As the first of the group of royal metal sarcophagi, it was already of interest to art historians and historians. Equally intriguing is the cartouche placed on it, representing a set of coats of arms that has not yet attracted the attention of researchers. It forms a heraldic composition introduced by Sigismund Augustus as the composite coat of arms of the Grand Duke of Lithuania. It is mainly known from coins, and its use besides numismatics was extremely rare.
