Abstract

The aim of the article is to clarify a number of doubts arising from the study of certain heraldic images related to members of the Lithuanian Pac family, in particular those connected with Christopher Sigismund Pac, Chancellor of the Great Duchy of Lithuania, his spouse Claire Isabell de Mailly, as well as the Chancellor’s distant relative Casimir Michael Pac, Great Notary of the Duchy and knight of Malta. It was the last-mentioned nobleman who in the year 1685 arranged the burial of the married couple in the Camaldolese monastery church of their foundation at Pożajście (Pažaislis); for this occasion, the knight of Malta commissioned a pamphlet containing not only the eulogy given by the Reverend Chrysostom Gołębiowski, a famous preacher of the day but also images of quartered coats of arms with inescutcheons of the married couple as well as of his own arms. The article analyses the rather complex family relations of the personages in question and attempts to provide not only an explanation for the content of heraldic images related to the buried couple, but also an answer why the organiser of the burial, Casimir Michael Pac, commissioned a coat of arms different from the one his genealogy required.
