Abstract

The starting point for the analysis is the explanation of the term “progress,” which with regard to man means change understood as improvement. The main reflection of the Author focuses on the category of progress included by Benedict XVI in the encyclical letter Spe salvi. According to the Pope, the faith in progress not only replaces the faith in God but also contributes to building the world as “if God did not exist.” When the idea of progress is understood in such
a way, the central position is occupied by reason and freedom, which constitute the antithesis of the traditional dyad: faith and the Church. In the teaching of the Church, the word “development” has been used instead of the word “progress”.

According to Benedict XVI, an authentic and integral development should encompass each person in its every dimension (both in the dimension of material needs and – perhaps foremost – in the spiritual dimension).
