Abstract

The article describes the fear of speaking in people after total laryngectomy. First, the most important concepts used in the work are explained – total laryngectomy and fear of speaking. Then, two case studies based on conducted interviews are described. The interview was given by two people after laryngectomy: one speaking in fistula speech using a voice prosthesis, and the other using “electronic” speech using a laryngophone. Based on the analysis of the literature and the conducted interviews, it can be concluded that people after total laryngectomy may experience fear of speaking, especially in social situations. Symptoms of fear vary individually, and effective coping with fear primarily involves learning and improving substitute speech. The need for further research and personalization of therapy in order to improve the quality of life of patients is indicated.
