Abstract

Michał Starzeński, a Kościuszko Uprising insurgent and memoirist born in 1757, came from a family associated with the Branicki Court in Białystok. After initial education under the often-ill-chosen guidance of teachers and a period at a girls' boarding school, he was sent to study at the Theatine College in Warsaw. He stayed there from 1762 to 1765. In his memoir written years later, he left observations regarding the living conditions in the boarding school and the relationship between the monks and the students. Supplementary to these notes are pieces of information about this period in Starzeński's life contained in letters from his guardian to the boy's mother. Based on this, the article reconstructs education at the school, presents characterisations of the monks, Starzeński's classmates, living conditions, food, security issues, and students’ leisure time. Particularly valuable are the remarks contained in the letters, which written contemporaneously, show comments and reflections of an eyewitness on various events in the lives of the students and the monks caring for them, presenting the actual image of the college's and monks’ activities, which in this light appears quite different from that presented in previous studies on their history.
