Abstract

The history of Breviarium Romanum shows the always-interesting issues happening between two reforms. Over the centuries, the liturgical book has acquired connotations and enrichment, which should be known. The official prayer of the Church, today called the “Liturgy of the Hours – Liturgia Horarum”, used to be called Breviarium. It contained many regulations regarding a.o. the distinction between the prayer celebrated by canons in cathedrals and the prayer of monks in abbeys. At the time of the Council of Trent, there was an urgent need to reform this prayer. Based on the conditions established by the assembly of the Council itself, in 1568, an editio princeps was published. A comparison with the last editio typica of 1961 in the context of the liturgical reform makes it possible to grasp the essential uniformity with the Trentine text.
