Abstract

H.U. von Balthasar is critical of presenting God in cosmological and anthropological perspectives. He proposes a third perspective that focuses, from the very beginning on the dramatic story of love revealed in Jesus. Balthasar develops his Trinitarian theology in relation to the three transcendentals of Being: Beauty, Goodness and Truth. After all, love is beautiful, good and true. First of all, in the beautiful aspect of Jesus we see beauty of the Trinity. Secondly, there is drama between the infinite freedom (Triune God) and the finite freedom (man). Finally, it is through the notion of beauty and dramatic history of goodness, we discern truth that is ultimately the Trinitarian truth. Balthasar’s vision is worth admiring, however it raises a question whether the theologian does not exceed the limits when discussing passionately the inner life of the Trinity.
