Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present current demographic trends in Poland by Roman Catholic territorial dioceses. These individuals are rarely the subject of analysis, and studies of this type can be useful from the point of view of the evolution of the Church's socially important diaconal function (charity, support for individuals, families and local communities, activities for the sick and poor, assistance in times of need, etc.). The analysis uses CSO data from the last two censuses (2011, 2021), which were converted from 1 km grid or municipalities to these ecclesiastical units. The growth of dioceses with the centers of the so-called Big Five (Warsaw and Krakow, Poznan, Tri-City and Wroclaw) and depopulation and strong aging of the population in almost all other dioceses were shown. Expected further depopulation generates serious challenges for social and local policies, related to problems in the areas of education, accessibility to services, transportation, health care and senior care, as well as for local governments. Local organizations, including churches deeply rooted in local communities, can play an important role in alleviating these tensions.
