Abstract

The „Family 500+” program was originally intended to address demographic goals. However, in retrospect,
it can be stated that while the achievement of this goal is debatable, there is a consensus among microeconomists
and social policymakers that the program has stabilized the household budgets of large families and
dramatically reduced poverty in Poland. This study attempts to explore the links between the 500+ parental benefits
and parents’ educational aspirations. The city of Giżycko was selected for the study. This region is characterized by
low economic development, high rates of seasonal work based on tourism, and high rates of social problems. The
obtained measurements (conducted in September 2027 – i.e., after one year of the program’s operation) allow for
a moderate identification of links between benefit recipients and parents’ educational aspirations. After stabilizing
their household budgets, beneficiary parents clearly invest the benefits they receive in the future and education
of their children and in family life. They seem to be aware of the importance of education for building children’s
human capital and are ready to allocate higher amounts for their education and development, provided that the
household budget situation, strengthened by the “Family 500+” Programme, allows it.
