Emotional Bonds with Parents and Intimate Relationship Quality of Adult Children of Divorce

Abstract

The aim of the study was to identify the relationship between the quality of the intimate relationship of young adults of divorced family and the emotional bond between them and their parents. In addition, the aspect that was taken into consideration was the influence of the mediator- the perception of the family atmosphere- on the mentioned variables. In the study of the emotional bond with parents, apart from declarative methods- questionnaire, we also used the projective ones. The research was conducted on a group of 30 young adults from divorced families who currently stay in a close, non-formalized relationship.
The results confirmed the existence of the relationship between specific aspects of emotional bonds with parents- both mother and father- and the quality of a close relationship, as well as between its separated dimensions: intimacy, passion and commitment. The aspect that was proved to modify the relationship specificity of emotional bonds and the quality of the intimate relationship turned out to be a narration of both parents among the situation of divorce during the period of its happening.
Research show no simple relationship between the fact of divorce of parents during the childhood or adolescence of the subject and the quality of the intimate relationship in adulthood.
