Addictions as a cause of invalidity of marriages in canon law. Picture based on tribunal records – summary

Abstract

In canon law, there is the institution of annulment of marriage. The reason for such a decision may be a defect in marital consent, and the category of a defect in marital consent includes many causes of a psychic nature to assume the essential obligations of marriage (can. 1095 No. 3 of the Code of Canon Law of 1983). The group in question includes various types of addictions. The article presents tribunals cases related to addictions to alcohol, gambling, Internet, computer games, sex, pornography, work, people which led to the annulment of the marriage. The aim of such a presentation is to show examples of behaviours which, being from the medical point of view addictions, were at the same time canonical prerequisites for the declaration of annulment.
