Abstract

Can a large family do a good job of educating to values today? Often the large family is seen as inefficient and unable to perform its functions well, including value education. The family is one of the most important primary groups, it has a sense of its own separateness, it has its own tasks and life goals, an arrangement of permanent interpersonal relations, a definite structure'. The goals of the family include primarily the begetting of offspring, love, nurture, the pursuit of happiness, etc. Functions are the same realities as goals but viewed from a different angle. These include, among others, the reproductive, emotional, educational, or caring function. The educational function is to introduce the child to the world, to instill in him/her a system of values and patterns of behavior valid in the society, and to prepare him/her for fulfilling various social roles in his/her future. Parents have an important role in shaping the view of the world and upbringing to values; they are the example of realizing given values and living in accordance with these values. The family is a special and fundamental environment where the encounter with concrete values and their consolidation through repetition takes place. Today, in terms of building and implementing a proper family philosophy, there are many dangers called the philosophy of success, appearances, possessions, and pleasures, causing a gap between the child and the parent and blurring the most important values. Negative opinions about large families are unequivocally hurtful. In Poland, the 2 plus 3 model was adopted as the coefficient of a large family. The number of 2+3 families is declining every year. One of the reasons is the negative perception of the phenomenon of multiple children. The contemporary image of a large family is stereotypical. This family is associated with social marginality, the occurrence of pathology, unattended children, as chaotic and noisy. On the other hand - this family model is very desirable from the point of view of the demographic condition of Poland. How to change the image of a large family to encourage the young generation to start a large family? These are undoubtedly challenges facing the Polish family policy.
