Professional activity of the elderly in Poland

Abstract

The low level of elderly employment in Poland is caused by the existence of mechanisms of their exclusion from the labor market which are associated with the ageism and age discrimination. The main goal of this article is to present the situation of the elderly in the labor market by analyzing indicators relating to em-ployment and unemployment, as well as a description of some manifestations of discrimination in this field, which leads to the seniors withdrawal from the labor market. The elderly position in the labor market in Poland is shown in the background of their situation in the European Union. Data used for calculating the indicators were taken from the Eurostat databases: demography (demo_pop), employment – LFS adjusted series (lfsi_emp_a) and total unemployment – LFS series (lfsa_unemp), while data showing the elderly di-scrimination in this sphere of their activity from scientific publications.
