Sacrum as an aspect of Christmas culture –the identity of the young Poles abroad

Ewa Garstka

Abstract

This article is an attempt to reflect on issues relating to festive culture in emigrant communities. It combines the issues of identity of young Poles abroad with the problems of food studies. Primary purpose is to answer questions such as what is sacred for modern people and how it can be manifested in globalized world. Postmodern human being living in a world rejecting the existence of external reference points feels lost and uprooted. Holiday rituals help them to find themselves in a strange reality. In the context of Christmas –table can become a symbol of unifying families and groups.
