Abstract

The sacrament of Holy Baptism, the „gateway” to Christian life and the other sacraments, is celebrated
in the Church today in two forms: infant baptism and adult baptism, which are reflected in two baptismal books:
„Rites of Baptism for Children” and „Rites of Christian Initiation for Adults.” The rituals of the sacrament of baptism
strongly emphasize the truth that human life has its source in God the Creator. This perspective on the gift of life,
both temporal and eternal, is an important reminder for modern people. The baptismal rites also present the multidimensional
truth regarding a person’s vocation to marriage and family life. An analysis of the liturgical books of
baptism reveals the high demands and important tasks placed on the parents of a baptized child, and the parents
themselves are given practical guidelines on the attitudes through which they should cultivate marital love and the
essential attributes of sacramental marriage. The rites of baptism also emphasize the fundamental task of marriage
and the Christian family, which is procreation. They also provide a series of guidelines on how to properly fulfill the
mission of raising a child, in accordance with the primary commitment to raising him or her in the faith.
