Abstract

This article examines parenting in the context of mental illness through the narratives of Mental Health Assistants (Ex-In) who raised children while coping with psychological strain. It considers biological, psychological, and social factors shaping family life, focusing on emotional bonds, communication, child self-esteem, and the impact of stigma. It also highlights that—with proper social, medical, and psychotherapeutic support and access to resources—relationships grounded in care and emotional presence are possible. Participants stress the need for social openness and systemic support for families facing mental health crises.
