Abstract

Mieczysław Brzeziński (1858-1911), through his activity, laid a sound foundation for the development of teaching staff in kindergartens and in primary schools on the Polish territories under the Russian partition. Brzeziński was convinced that a good elementary school teacher was not only a specialist in teaching pupils to read and write, counting or lecturing about nature, but above all, a mentor. In his opinion, the goal of the teacher’s work was not only to transfer knowledge and stimulate children’s intellectual and physical development, but also to concentrate on their social, cultural, moral, religious upbringing. The teacher’s activities, as Brzeziński contended, should have an integrated character and cover all spheres of the pupil’s life.
