Abstract

The consistent implementation of the idea of scientific and technological advancement of humanity, which prevailed from the modern times, is perceived as the fundamental cause of the contemporary ecological crisis. The views that promoted this idea was continued by many thinkers, whose views influenced the shape of current Western societies. Among them one should mention Auguste Comte, founder of sociology and initiator of positivism. This article attempts to reconstruct positivist views on the place of human in nature and discuss them. Investigations are being conducted to clarify to what extent these views have translated into a deepening of the sense of alienation of modern human from nature. The decisive factor is the fact that the positivist position is strongly anthropocentric, which manifests primarily in the continuation of modern Baconian recommendations for subordinating nature to human needs. Positivism has also developed a scientific method in the postulated by science and materialism direction, which on the one hand contributed to the enormous leap of civilization of mankind, but on the other - it turned out to be a deeply crisis-generating for human relationship with nature.
