Abstract

The subject of this article concerns the community impact of the Church within a society. This issue is primarily reviewed on a social-historic ground while taking into account the theological perspective. In the traditional model of a society, religion played an important role in integrating, organising and legislating a nation and state as well as setting the code of conduct for individuals who live within. Throughout the centuries the influence of religion on a community had taken different scopes and forms. It was transformed, i.e. weakened and reoriented, in order to satisfy individual’s needs. Nonetheless, in a society the Church (religion) remains as an abiding reservoir of national and social symbols, which serves as a criterion of moral judgments, a „provider“ of existential meaning, a source of internal motivation and support during critical situations as well as a „barrier“ of perspective concerning the ultimate destiny of mankind.
