Abstract

Currently the question of the relationship between Christian and liberal values proves to be entirely justified. It is absolutely necessary to reject the thesis of complete contradiction of Christian and liberal axjology. There are, in fact, values common to these two systems: the affirmation of the inviolability of human dignity, the importance of freedom, the principle of social pluralism, the rule of law, respect for private property and the free market economy. The debate is however situated at the level of two fundamental questions, namely: what is the essential value for each of the two systems and how should the notion of freedom be understood. The fundamental value advocated by Christian axiology is man himself, in other words his personal dignity, while that advocated by liberal axiology is freedom. Therefore, we understand that this different positioning of the two value systems has strong repercussions both on the analysis and on the estimation and possibility of explanation of contemporary events.
