Suspended Parenting in the Case of Child Resocialization in a Youth Educational Centre

Abstract

The article defines the role and goals of suspended parenting in the case of juveniles’ stay in a youth educational facility during their social rehabilitation. The publication is based on the author’s five- year experience of work as an addiction psychotherapist. Over those years, the author conducted many hours of consultations with more than 125 charges and their parents in the course of therapeutic sessions. The analysis, apart from one-to-one consultations, also embraced personal files of charges. Juveniles may stay in such facilities for several weeks, but more often for months or even for several, e.g., 3-4 years. The present article discusses the tasks facing families of children staying in such facilities as well as introduces and defines such concepts as: suspended parenting, social rehabilitation, readaptation, attachment in children. The article also contains infographics on the reasons for referring minors to Youth Educational Centres (MOW) and the possibilities of supporting both the child and the parents/guardians by such a centre. In addition, it provides suggestions regarding the juvenile rehabilitation system as well as guidelines for practitioners.
