In the last years we have been witnessing an increasing interest in J. Bowlby’s attachment theory among psychologists. The attachment approach was applied in a great number of studies in such fields of psychology as personality, development, social psychology and psychopathology. At the beginning of 1990s the attachment theory approach was also introduced in the field of psychology of religion. The present paper is dedicated to this new research tradition which has been contributing to further increase of knowledge regarding psychological conditions of religiousness. Firstly, the main assumptions and development of attachment theory are presented. Then, the theoretical basis, which warrants the use of the attachment approach in psychology of religion, is outlined. Finally, the results of the more important studies on religiousness from the perspective of the attachmentapproach are discussed.
