Ethical Issues of Economic Systems in the Encyclical Centesimus Annus of John Paul II

Abstract

The events of 1989 and the centenary of “Rerum novarum” gave the Pope Saint Paul II, the occasion to take up the subject of economic order and very to ask an important question: "Can one say that after the failure of communism, Capitalism the victorious social system itself and that it is the goal of the efforts of countries trying to rebuild their economies and societies? Is that maybe him? Model to be proposed to third world countries seeking directions for the seek true economic and social progress?" (CA 42). The Pope avoids mentioning any designations. Instead, he describes up to the details the order-ethical foundations of an economic system that freedom, creativity of man and social justice in the economic sphere. encyclical does not propose a concrete economic model, but offers the general form of an ethical justified economic order. The author's reflection relates to the exposition the ethical foundations of this model and evaluation of existing market economy systems in the light of the encyclical.
