Happiness and suffering are experiences that are an indispensable part of human life. They intertwine
with each other in human life. An important element of human life that connects happiness and suffering is hope.
In the case of happiness, it is the hope of receiving the goods that one expects and desires, and for a Christian, the
greatest good and happiness is salvation and meeting the Risen Christ in His Kingdom. Of course, this ultimate
good is earned through the martyrdom and resurrection of Christ, but it also requires human effort through a life
in accordance with the Gospel and the Ten Commandments. With regard to suffering, Christian hope allows us to
expect that this experience will not only be overcome and pass away, just as in Christ’s life His suffering and death
were overcome by the Resurrection, but experiencing suffering united with Christ’s suffering allows us to expect
the fulfillment of hope and the attainment of eternal life, the joy of being saved, that is, happiness. Therefore, both
in happiness and in suffering, Christian hope of reaching the ultimate goal of life, which is salvation and eternal
happiness, strengthens us on our journey through life, and the source of this hope is the belief that God, who is
truthful and always keeps His word and loves man, desires his happiness. In this Jubilee Year, celebrated under the
slogan Pilgrims of Hope, we wish to show, based on an analysis of the teachings of the popes of the 21st century
on the subject of hope, that Christian hope is an essential element of human life, enabling us to pursue the goal of
Christian life, namely salvation and eternal life, both in times of happiness and in times of suffering.
