Abstract

This article focuses on the palaeographic studies conducted by Russian scholars at the end of the nineteenth and the beginning of the twentieth century. E. Karski, A. Sobolevsky, E. Kałużniacki, and others noted a certain distinctiveness of Moldavian Cyrillic writing in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Despite a certain Pan-Slavic approach, they provided detailed descriptions of orthographic schools as well as features of uncial and semi-uncial scripts. After World War I, no significant progress was made in research on Slavic manuscripts produced in fifteenth-century Moldavia. The Moldavian and Wallachian scribal tradition emerged under South Slavic influence and later spread to Red Ruthenia. One significant characteristic of Moldavian manuscripts was the difficulty in distinguishing fifteenth-century copies from those of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The author also introduces into scholarly circulation the preliminary observations of T. Korzon on Moldavian manuscripts held by the National Library in Warsaw, as well as those of A. Pop on those preserved in the collections of the University Library in Cluj-Napoca.
