Abstract

This article examines a manuscript travel diary from a journey through Volhynia in 1836, preserved in the Princes Czartoryski Library in Kraków. An analysis of its contents has made it possible to identify its author as Eliza Branicka, later Eliza Krasińska. The article discusses the journey undertaken by the young aristocrat, who departed from Alexandria in October 1836 and visited former estates belonging to the so-called Tulczyn estate complex, once owned by her grandfather, Stanisław Szczęsny Potocki. The diary also provides a valuable opportunity to explore the worldview and perceptions of the young Eliza. Apart from the published selection of correspondence of Eliza Branicka Krasińska edited by Zbigniew Sudolski, this diary constitutes the earliest known source relating to her youth.
