Abstract

Environmental degradation has intensified the need for sustainability education that integrates ethical and cultural dimensions. In Indonesia, pesantren offer a distinctive institutional context for linking environmental responsibility with Islamic values. This study conceptualizes eco-pesantren as a faith-based sustainability education model by developing an integrated framework that connects Islamic environmental ethics with curriculum, pedagogy, daily practices, and institutional governance. Using qualitative library research and thematic content analysis, the study synthesizes literature on sustainability education, Islamic environmental ethics, and pesantren studies. The findings propose a four-pillar framework consisting of Green Curriculum, Green Learning, Green Activity, and Green Management, which together form a whole-institution approach to sustainability education. The framework demonstrates how principles such as khalifah, mizan, and amanah can be operationalized within educational and institutional practices. This study contributes to the discourse on faith-based sustainability education by providing an integrated conceptual model of eco-pesantren, while also offering a foundation for future empirical research across diverse pesantren contexts.
