1. Purpose and thematic scope

Studia Ecologiae et Bioethicae (SEeB) is an interdisciplinary academic journal devoted to the humanistic study of the ecological crisis and the relationships between human beings, society, and the natural world. Established in 2003, the journal has grown out of the research tradition of the Centre for Ecology and Ecophilosophy at the Institute of Philosophy of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw. It reflects a methodological approach that combines empirical inquiry with humanistic and philosophical reflection on environmental issues.

The journal publishes research in environmental ethics, ecophilosophy, and the philosophical, social, cultural, political, religious, and ecotheological dimensions of contemporary ecological challenges. It promotes interdisciplinary dialogue grounded in a critical and interpretative approach to environmental issues.

SEeB is particularly interested in contributions that go beyond description and offer theoretical, ethical, philosophical, social, cultural, religious, ecotheological, legal, educational, or policy-oriented perspectives on contemporary environmental problems. The journal gives priority to articles that interpret environmental phenomena, examine their underlying assumptions, and analyze their implications for values, human–nature relations, social structures, public policy, and cultural contexts.

Empirical or technical studies are considered for publication only when they are placed within a broader interpretative framework and explicitly address ethical, philosophical, social, cultural, political, religious, ecotheological, legal, educational, or policy-oriented questions. Purely descriptive, narrowly technical, or data-driven studies that do not develop such a broader interpretative dimension generally fall outside the journal’s scope.

The journal welcomes contributions from different disciplines, provided that they advance scholarly reflection on the ethical, philosophical, social, cultural, political, religious, ecotheological, legal, educational, or policy-oriented dimensions of the relationship between human beings, society, and the natural world.

“Studia Ecologiae et Bioethicae” is published quarterly by Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw.

SEeB operates under the Diamond Open Access model. The journal does not charge authors any submission fees, article processing charges, or publication fees, and all published content is made openly available to readers without subscription or access charges.

All research and review articles accepted for consideration undergo external double-blind peer review. Detailed information on the review procedure is available in the “Peer Review Process” section of the journal website.

SEeB publishes articles exclusively in English.

The journal is academically affiliated with the Institute of Philosophy and the Centre for Ecology and Ecophilosophy.

3. History

“Studia Ecologiae et Bioethicae” was established in 2003 alongside the Institute of Ecology and Bioethics at Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw. The journal was created as a platform for scholarly exchange among members of the Institute, collaborating researchers, and other scholars committed to addressing environmental crises through interdisciplinary research. The journal’s publication frequency changed as it developed. It was published annually from 2003 to 2008, biannually in 2009 and 2010, and quarterly from 2011 onwards. As a result of structural changes introduced at UKSW in 2020, responsibility for the journal’s academic and editorial development was transferred to the Institute of Philosophy. The journal remains published by Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University in Warsaw and is academically affiliated with the Institute of Philosophy and the Centre for Ecology and Ecophilosophy.

The development of “Studia Ecologiae et Bioethicae” has been shaped by the scholars and editors who contributed to its creation, organisation, and academic profile. Editors-in-Chief, Deputy Editors, and Editorial Secretaries played a particularly important role in this process. 

The journal’s first Editor-in-Chief was Professor Józef Marceli Dołęga, who held the position from 2003 to 2014. Professor Wojciech Bołoz served as Deputy Editor-in-Chief from 2003 to 2010, followed by Associate Professor Zbigniew Łepko from 2010 to 2020. Professor Janusz Uchmański served as Editor-in-Chief from 2014 to 2020, with Associate Professor Zbigniew Łepko continuing as Deputy Editor-in-Chief. The position of Editorial Secretary was held by Jacek W. Czartoszewski from 2003 to 2010, Dominika Dzwonkowska, PhD, from 2011 to 2016, and Michał Latawiec, PhD, from 2013 to 2020. Since 6 February 2020, Associate Professor Ryszard F. Sadowski has served as Editor-in-Chief, Associate Professor Krassimira Ilieva-Makulec as Deputy Editor-in-Chief, and Jacek Meller, PhD, as Editorial Secretary.
