Abstract

The article attempts to outline the essential features of the transition between the 19th and 20th centuries in pedagogy and catechesis in Europe and on Polish soil under partitions. This period was marked by a shift from the neoscholastic model, which emphasized the catechetical content memorized by students, to the Munich method. The Munich method incorporated elements of pedagogy, didactics, and psychology into religious education. At the beginning of the 20th century, the content of religion lessons was delivered using methods derived from general didactics. The „cult of method” in religious didactics eventually led to a crisis, which was addressed through the material-kerygmatic renewal. The article also presents contemporary guidelines emphasizing the primacy of content over method and provides two examples of catechetical methods that fulfill this postulate.
