Abstract

The aim of the article is to look at Catholic attempts to explain various aspects of the presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharistic Sacrifice. The fact of this presence can be interpreted in three ways: 1. symbolically (least often), 2. realistically (eastern
theories of constansisation, inpanation and – in the West – the theory of transformation, which is the basis for the development of transubstantiation), 3. synthetically (substantial presence of „through a sign” – II Vatican Council). Another problem is what kind of Jesus we are dealing with – historical or glorified, and at what point in his mission and work? Among the theories explaining the presence of Christ in the Holy Sacrament, the theory of transubstantiation (Guitmud of Aversa, Council of Trent) takes the leading place. They are complemented by transsiginifaction and transfinalization, recognized by Paul VI as helpful in understanding the doctrine of transubstantiation, as well as the existentialist theory of transesentation by A. Hulsboch.
