Abstract

In 1320 a diocesan synod convened by Bishop Nanker took place in Cracow. The statutes of this synod were of great importance, as they shaped the priests of the Cracow diocese (and beyond) for decades to come, providing them with helpful pastoral compendium. Only a hundred years later, in 1420, was this compendium expanded and supplemented by Bishop Wojciech Jastrzębiec. Bishop Nanker’s synodal statues were the program of his episcopal activity in Cracow and a manifestation of his pastoral care. For priests, they provided an accessible exposition, especially on the sacraments , liturgy, truths of faith and preaching. This article will attempt to present the medieval priest based on these texts. This work may contribute to further research on the history in the medieval period of Church in Poland, especially in Cracow.
