Abstract

The Norms for Proceeding in the Discernment of Alleged Supernatural Phenomena issued by the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith in 2024 presuppose the reality of the action of the Holy Spirit in the midst of spiritual experience, yet they do not define the epistemic structure of this category. This article reconstructs the thought of cardinal Yves Congar, O.P., concerning the distinction between the presence in the midst (in medio) and the presence within (in) as crucial for an adequate understanding of discernment. The thesis advanced here is that Spiritus in medio possesses theological meaning only as a dynamism oriented toward Spiritus inhabitans. Only then does “presence” cease to be a description of religious phenomena and become a form of the Holy Spirit’s action in the Church that is open to theological evaluation. Consequently, Congar’s distinction reveals the foundations of an ecclesiology of discernment.
