Abstract

It is commonly noted that Christian hope has an alternative in atheistic hope – equal to it, although radically different. The American philosopher and theologian William Lane Craig advocates against this statement. This article presents three pillars of Craig’s argumentation, using synthetic and comparative methods. The results of research on Craig’s argumentation show how Polish fundamental theology could utilize Craig’s analyses and conclusions to expand the already developed argument of hope. So far, no such study has been undertaken, even though Craig is widely respected as a theologian-apologist, especially in English-speaking countries. Research shows that the Christian faith in God is a religion of great hope, while atheism offers a great illusion of life, unable to provide humans with either ultimate meaning and purpose or objective value. Without the existence of God, human hope is a ‘noble self-deception.’ Christianity transcends this illusion. This is important in times of religious and moral pluralism and in the loss of life’s meaning.
