Abstract

The article presents an outline of the concept of the aesthetics of memory, which the author – clarifying it further – refers to as the "aesthetics of unforgetting" or "aesthetics of reminisce". It is not so much about commemoration itself but rather about the artistic and educational practices present in public space and characteristic of contemporary visual culture. In his considerations, the author refers both to Polish theoretical reflection on culture and to British cultural studies. He explains the connections between collective memory and political and economic power, art and the creation of national myths, historical politics, and the educational system. He argues that although culture and science have been systematically used by the apparatus of power for centuries to manipulate the area of collective memory, the last decades represent a "time of unforgetting". Modern art and informal education are harnessed in this process. The aesthetics of memory, understood in this way, belong to cultural forms of resistance.
