Abstract

On an international level, the indications for implementing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), recognized as a necessary condition for its realization, trace back to the recommendations contained in the document of Agenda 21 – a global action program adopted at the UN Conference on "Environment and Development" in Rio de Janeiro in 1992. Since then, numerous commitments have emerged to implement ESD under the auspices of UNESCO, which is the leading United Nations agency for Education for Sustainable Development. This article discusses the key recommendations for implementing ESD under UNESCO's guidance, which influence the planning of environmental and climate education in Poland. A review of key documents formed the basis for developing recommendations regarding the organization of these types of education, considering ongoing work on preparing a Strategic Action Plan for Environmental Education.
