Abstract

The object of the formal and iconographic analysis is the tombstone of Senator and General Evgeny
Rozhnov, erected around 1876 at the Wola Orthodox Cemetery in Warsaw. Its designer was presumably
the architect Witold Lanci, who, using illustrated foreign publications, combined the Byzantine capital
from the ciborium of the Euphrasian Basilica in Poreč with the nineteenth-century column from
the tombstone of Aglaé Didier at the Montmartre Cemetery in Paris (designed by Auguste Préault,
1863-1866), introducing only certain changes to the original elements. From the French prototype,
the designer also borrowed the ideological expression in addition to the form.
