Abstract

Family is a vital and natural social unit in the fabric of the society. Under the Constitution of the Republic of Poland, all public institutions are obliged to provide family with protection and care. The abovementioned constitutional provision is particularly relevant to vulnerable or single-parent families. The Commissioner for Citizens Rights is an institution which takes responsibility for safeguarding rights of families as well as addresses the presumed cases of menace to family welfare. Due to their constitutional placement, the Commissioner is involved in numerous cases concerning the welfare of family. In this article, a range of successful legal disputes which affected Polish families is presented. They involve, among others, such areas as social benefits, disabilities, housing conditions as well as the issues impacting Polish families abroad. In many cases, the Commissioner’s intervention has led to the modification of administrative practice and legislative amendments.
