Abstract

The author, starting from Saul Friedländer’s essay Reflections of Nazism and the problem of kitsch and aesthetic neutralization addressed by the historian, tries to determine whether István Szabo’s film Mefisto (1981) does show the neutralization of the past, which is dangerous for the memory of the Holocaust. Analyzing the motif of the face, which is very important for the construction of the film and takes on a different formula (the author focuses on: the mask, the status of the actor, the changeability of the name and the ideology proclaimed by the protagonist), the author comes to the conclusion that Szabo’s main character is devoid of identity. Thus, the story told by the director does not reach the truth about the Holocaust, but is a soothing story that Friedländer calls “the Hitler in each of us.” The metaphor of the face used by Szabó becomes a neutralization of Nazism.
