Abstract

In this article, a critical edition is presented of a historical source preserved in the Princes Czartoryski Library in Kraków (BCzart., MS 1213): a handwritten travel diary originally titled “Journal. Travel Diary through Ukraine, from Alexandria to Ustyluh, 1836.”A detailed analysis has established that its author is Eliza Branicka, later the wife of Zygmunt Krasiński. Moreover, the diary’s content sheds light on previously unknown family relationships and reveals a world seen through the eyes of a young aristocrat not yet sixteen years old. This diary is, to date, the earliest known source providing information about the youth of Eliza Branicka.
