Hope cannot disappoint

Published: 2026-06-24

The next volume of "Catechetical Studies," published in the Holy Year 2025, is devoted to the theme of this blessed time for the Church – hope that does not disappoint. The editors intended this catechetical reflection on Christian hope to serve as a culmination of a period of intense engagement with this topic. The reference to hope in catechesis concerns three levels: catechesis, understood as the Church's work aimed at educating in the faith, the catechist, and the catechized. These three perspectives provide a relatively comprehensive picture of how hope, a divine virtue least developed in theological literature, can and should become the framework for catechetical efforts and those directly involved in them.

The Holy Year 2025 was also a time of concrete hope, offered by the new pontificate. Understandably, this fact could not have escaped the attention of catechists. The life of Pope Leo XIV and the origins of his teaching are addressed in two introductory articles, whose authors draw heavily on the Augustinian spirituality of the new Vicar of Christ on earth. Recognizing this connection with Augustine is crucial; it is key to understanding what inspires particular hope in the Church today, especially unity.
