Peer Review Process

The process of qualifying submitted manuscripts consists of three stages:

1) The editors perform an initial evaluation of the manuscript in terms of its compliance with the journal’s profile and fulfillment of formal requirements. This evaluation usually takes no more than 7 working days.

2) Two independent reviewers perform a substantive and formal evaluation of submitted manuscripts. Usually, this process takes up to 45 days.

3) Based on the reviewers’ opinions, the editor-in-chief decides either to accept, reject or send the manuscripts back to the author for correction according to the reviewers’ suggestions. In the case of wide discrepancies of reviewers’ opinions, the editors may request an additional review. The editor-in-chief may ask for the opinion on a given manuscript of a commissioning editor and/or other members of the editorial team. The final decision to publish or reject a manuscript is made by the editor-in-chief. Usually, this decision is made within 7 days of receiving the last review.

The editors periodically evaluate the quality of reviews and develops recommendations for reviewers. These activities are aimed at improving the quality of published materials and standardizing the criteria for evaluating manuscripts.

Once a year, the editors publish on the journal’s website a list of reviewers with whom it has cooperated in publishing subsequent volumes of the journal.

Members of the editorial team participate in workshops and training sessions designed for editors of scientific journals.

The author of a submitted manuscript may question decisions made by the editors during the publishing process. These issues are resolved by the editors. If the author disagrees with the editors’ decision, the matter is forwarded to the TNFS president, whose decision is final.
