Abstract

The article provides an in-depth analysis of the photograph Concert for Berkut by Markiyan and Oleg Macecha and Andriy Meakovsky, taken in 2013 in Kyiv during the Revolution of Dignity. The photograph is discussed from both a historical and a hermeneutical perspective. In the preliminary analysis, the work discusses the contrast between the two sides of the conflict: the protesters and the police, which was revised during the reading, allowing us to arrive at the truth of the composition, its phenomenon, and visual meaning, which are based on the interesting relation between the semantics of the photograph and its syntax. This proved decisive in determining the iconicity of the work, which is not understood here as an “icon” of the events in question, but as a unique combination of form and content, characteristic of a few works of high artistic value. Such works include Concert for Berkut, whose iconicity lies in the semantic productivity of the structural features of the work.
