Abstract

Various terms are used to describe theological reflection on the nature and mission of Scripture. Telford Work, whose thought this article is devoted to, prefers the term ‘bibliology.’ The text presents his conception of bibliology, its scope and structure, and its significance. The patristic and contemporary theological inspirations of the author of the monograph Living and Active: Scripture in the Economy of Salvation are indicated. Work’s conception of the divine-human ontology of Scripture is reviewed, with a special focus placed on the Christological dimension and the use of the incarnational analogy in the doctrine of Scripture, and the connection of bibliology with soteriology, ecclesiology and eschatology is mentioned. In the final section, attention is drawn to the weaker points of an outstanding theologically comprehensive and ecumenically open work by the evangelical theologian.
