The article has originated as a transcript of a conversation held by the authors at the time of a conference for Danish secondary school teachers. Its main aim has been to present the differences between school teaching in the scope of the basic knowledge and skills, and specialist training. The authors tackle the above issue in five points. First they address the question whether in modern school system there is a space any more for general education aimed at all students as a group or is not it rather advisable for the division into specialised educational paths to be made in the schooling process at the earliest possible stage so that to secure an optimal development environment for every individual student. In the second point, the opinion has been discussed in detail according to which education and upbringing aimed at all the students as a group should take an absolute priority. Then the authors provide an overview the link between general education and specialist training in the chosen 20th century educational models. Based on the analyses, in the fourth point criteria have been proposed for distinguishing between the admissible and inadmissible ways of combining the discussed areas of education and training. Finally, the authors point out to certain results of dismissing the discussed issue as irrelevant, both for the didactics and for the theory of educational science.
